Disambiguation: This article pertains to Garrett's second (and most popular) channel. For his first channel, see Stampylongnose. For the Stampy character in Minecraft, see Stampy. For the actor who plays Stampy, see Joseph Garrett.

stampylonghead (formerly known as Stampy - Let's Play) is the second channel made by Joseph Garrett. This channel is the home of his many Let's Play series on various video games, especially Minecraft.

History

2011-2012: Beginnings

The channel 'Stampylonghead' was created on 29th July 2011 as a side channel for his vlogs and the console gameplay channel, stampylongnose. The first, and for a long time, the only series of videos uploaded on this channel were his main Minecraft series set in Stampy's Lovely World (and other worlds).

Since his side channel did not obtain as many viewers as the more popular Stampylonghead channel, Garrett announced that the Minecraft series would switch back to the main channel. However, he could not go ahead with this change as he could only upload videos to a maximum length of 10 minutes on stampylongnose, thus rendering it impossible to transfer the series across.

As the number of episodes in his Minecraft series increased, the interest increased too. As the audience expanded, Garrett began to notice an increased proportion of younger viewers. At this point, he had begun to move his video content onto the stampylonghead channel, so at the realisation that his viewers may be offended by the language and gameplay shown, he ceased all inappropriate activity. At this point, the popularity and fame of his Minecraft videos reached a new height. Garrett had one of the fastest-growing channels on YouTube, reaching 1000 subscribers a week.

2013-2014: Rise in popularity

Garrett's rise to fame through the stampylonghead channel continued through 2013, with his number of subscribers and views continuously gaining throughout this period. He reached 100,000 subscribers in July 2013, from just 1000 subscribers by the beginning of that year. Numbers began to grow exponentially and would eventually reach 500,000 subscribers by November of that year. After the termination incident with Google, the channel had reached 900,000 subscribers by the end of the year. It would later gain its one-millionth subscriber on 8th January 2014.

The channel continued to grow in 2014, with its number of subscribers growing by millions, and would later gain one billion views. It would later gain 5 million subscribers in February 2015. 2014 to 2015 is considered by many to be Garrett's peak in popularity, with several articles stating that his channel was getting more popular “than Justin Bieber”. His popularity also brought the attention of Disney-owned Maker Studios (presently Disney Digital Network), where he would partner with them for various projects, including Wonder Quest, which premiered the following year.

Channel Termination Incident

On 2nd December 2013, Garrett received an email from Google that outlined that he had breached YouTube community guidelines, and thus his channel had been terminated. There was no official way for him to log in or appeal the decision. Garrett took to Facebook and Twitter to notify his fans and let them know that he was attempting to contact Google to ask them why this had happened. He emphasized that, if his channel could not be retrieved, he would start a new one and attempt to continue all ongoing series from there.

News began to spread that an incredibly popular Youtuber had lost his channel for unknown reasons. Fans of Stampy posted their disappointment and outrage on social networks, comments, blogs, etc. News sites featured bulletins of the growing bombardment that Google was getting of people demanding to know where their favourite orange and white cat had gone.

As the day stretched on, and there was still no word from Google, '#SaveStampy' trended on Twitter, attracting the attention of thousands more people who had never even heard of Stampy. 4J Studios, Markus "Notch" Persson, and The Yogscast are among the Twitter users who gave their sympathy.

Even WeeWeeGaming tried to get some YouTubers like SkyDoesMinecraft and Syndicate to help the trend, but it was unknown if they helped.

Tons of Stampy's helpers helped (even Stampy's teammates on Race To The Moon, superchache39 and Mousie) to reactivate Stampy's account.

A petition was started by AmyLee33 to help protest Google's and YouTube's decision. It received over 6,000 signatures.

Garrett's only hopes of bringing his channel back turned out to have worked. He asked one of his friends and fellow YouTubers, LDShadowLady, to pass the information to a member of Google who was a friend of hers, becoming his hero.

In the late afternoon, the channel went back online, along with all the videos and their viewer & subscriber counts. Garrett posted a video in the evening explaining what had happened and thanked everyone who had shown support and sympathy.

Strangely, Google only briefly apologised and never mentioned why the channel had been taken down in the first place. Whilst they admitted to it being a genuine mistake, they did not issue a statement as to what caused the termination in the first place.

There have been no such takedowns since.

2015-2018

In August 2015, one of Stampy's well-known collaborators, Lee, was subject to controversy as posted by a popular tabloid newspaper and was brought attention of many by another prominent YouTuber. After his departure in September, the number of views began to slowly decline which continued throughout 2016, although Lee's controversy would become a small part of why Stampy's popularity began to decline. Despite this, the channel reached 8 million subscribers in October 2016.

On 12th March 2017, Garrett posted a Let's Talk video about whether his channel was dying. He stated that he did not care about the drop in the views and that nothing had changed since when he was getting more views. Despite the change in trends, he would still keep on doing what he likes and is passionate about. The new trends that happened would become a catalyst for the channel's decline. Minecraft's popularity, in general, began to decline by that time, only for the game to return to popularity two years later. Some also blamed the decline of the channel on the changing algorithm of recommended videos on YouTube. In a later Let's Talk video regarding an update to the channel, he announced that he would now upload fewer Minecraft videos.

In May 2018, Garrett announced he would slow down with Minecraft videos after Ocean Den had ended, and thus, he would not create any new series based on Minecraft and would be focused more on one-offs rather than a series of videos (like Stampy Shorts). Both Lovely World and its spin-off series, Stampy's Funland would remain the only active Minecraft series on the channel. On 6th August 2018, a new series was announced, this time would be a new series that focuses on him doing a skill every week. It later premiered as the 1 Week Challenge.

On 10th October 2018, he announced via Twitter that after the annual Lovely World Halloween special, he would temporarily stop making Minecraft videos and produce fewer videos on content other than Minecraft. This was to change his focus to writing his novel series, returning to college to take a course in Creative Writing (which is related to the making of the novel), and doing other bigger projects in the future. It was also done to give him time to decide which platform he would continue recording the Lovely World series when he comes back since both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One Editions of Minecraft (the versions he plays on) are discontinued. On 24th October 2018, he announced that he was done editing his final Minecraft video for the foreseeable future. That video was uploaded seven days later, named Terror Trio. The final Stampy's Funland video was uploaded on 3rd November, where he and Fizzy played Drenched.

After he paused making Minecraft videos, he continued to upload videos occasionally which continued throughout most of 2019.

2019-present

On 19th October 2019, he returned to Minecraft by uploading a new Lovely World video named "Mirror World". He also started streaming on the channel where he plays different games every stream. His first stream on the channel was Minecraft where he played some mini-games and toured his Lovely World on the Bedrock edition. He eventually announced the return of the Lovely World series in 2020, with the episode, "Back To Business", being uploaded on 19th August 2020.

In December 2019, Space Den premiered on the channel, marking the first Minecraft series to air after over a year.

On 8th February 2021, the channel reached ten million subscribers, thus Garrett receiving his Diamond Play Button from YouTube. In November of the same year, he began uploading YouTube Shorts alongside his regular videos.

On 25th January 2023, the channel reached 8 billion channel views.

In April 2023, Garrett officially announced the imminent end of the Lovely World series later that year, after which he will be less active on the channel, save for videos on other games that will be uploaded occasionally, to focus on writing his novel series, to produce content for The Bonus Points, and to spend more time outside of the online space in general. The final Lovely World episode, "Thanks For Watching", was uploaded on 21st October 2023, which also marked the end of planned episodes on the channel, which Garrett described as a "soft retirement".

Before this, Garrett launched a series of endless live streams to the channel that featured various Lovely World episodes. After the Lovely World series ended, he expanded the scope of his live streams to include videos beyond the Lovely World, naming them "The Stampy Channel", which was launched on 26th October 2023 and ran until the first week of January 2024.

Content

Stampylonghead's channel can be summed up as 'family-friendly gameplay content', very different from what Joseph Garrett used to make on the stampylongnose channel. Uploads are released daily, with "a Minecraft video every single day" (which has since been reduced).

The channel is perhaps most positively acclaimed for the 'Lovely World' Minecraft series, with a majority of the videos bypassing 1 million views each, peaking at over 60 million views for the most popular episode.

Aside from Minecraft, the channel can be attributed to uploading a variety of different games, most notably Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Lego The Hobbit, Doki-Doki Universe, Disney Infinity, Terraria, Skylanders: Trap Team, Skylanders: Imaginators, Splatoon, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Lego Worlds, Mario Kart 8, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, King's Quest, Minecraft: Story Mode, Super Mario Maker, Roblox, Broken Age, Rain, Papo & Yo, The Unfinished Swan, The Walking Dead, Deus Ex, Shadow of the Colossus, Spelunky, Slender, Ico, The Last Guardian, Journey, Unravel, Ratchet & Clank, and many other video games.

Popularity

stampylonghead was one of the fastest-growing channels on YouTube of any genre. Currently, it has gained over 10,000,000 subscribers, with 5 million of them being gained from 2013 to 2015.

Garrett has received three Creator Awards from YouTube: the Silver Play Button plaque for reaching 100,000 subscribers in 2013, the Gold Play Button plaque for reaching 1,000,000 subscribers the following year, and the Diamond Play Button for reaching 10,000,000 subscribers in 2021. He has a tradition of uploading Subscriber Specials to mark some of his subscriber milestones, with the earliest one uploaded when he reached a thousand subscribers.

The series which gain the most views on average appear to be those that are filmed in the game Minecraft, in particular, the Lovely World series that is on an episode count of over 700, and is produced once weekly (formerly twice a week).

Trivia

  • Garrett confirmed in a 2021 live stream that he would just stick to just uploading Lovely World and Space Den Minecraft videos and would not join any series of other YouTubers such as the popular Minecraft SMPs. This is despite numerous requests from viewers and fans for him to join popular and emerging SMPs such as the Dream SMP or the new Shady Oaks SMP which features old Minecraft YouTubers such as DanTDM and iBallisticSquid.
